Mindanao Storytime: Amina and the City of Flowers
May 12 (Sat), noon-2 pm
Revolution Books NYC
437 Malcolm X Blvd, at 132nd Street, Harlem, NYC
Celebrate Asian Pacific Heritage month through children’s story! Join us for a very special reading of “Amina and the City of Flowers” in Harlem with Sari-Sari Storybooks and Sining Kapuluan, co-sponsored by Revolution Books New York. Amina, a young Yakan weaver, is homesick for Basilan, but she finds inspiration for her loom in the people and color of her new home, Zamboanga City.
We’ll travel to Zamboanga through Amina’s story, and discuss the rich diversity of the Southern Philippines that Amina observes. Then we’ll hear Yakan and Tausug music and practice some simple dance steps with Sining Kapuluan. Light refreshments will be served. This is a kid-friendly event, so bring the whole family!
This story of migration and creativity takes us to one of the world’s most language-diverse countries (with 181 living languages), and introduces children to Chavacano, one of only two Spanish Creoles in the world.
Author and publisher Christina Newhard will be there to sign copies. Sari-Sari Storybooks’ other books, “Melo the Umang-Boy” and “Kalipay and the Tiniest Tiktik” will also be available for signing and sale.
* Suggested donation of $5-10 for our event host, Revolution Books, but no one will be turned away.
